Perpetual Help and University of St. La Salle-Bacolod go for crucial wins against a pair of struggling rivals today as the quarters race heats up in the penultimate elims playdate of the ninth Shakey’s V-League Presented by Smart at The Arena in San Juan.
The Lady Altas, toting an even 1-1 card, take on the winless Southwestern U side in Group A at 2 p.m., needing no less than a victory to seal their stint in the next round.
But the Lady Cobras will surely be going all out to foil the reigning NCAA champions and keep their flickering quarters hope alive in the season-opening conference of the country’s premier women’s volley league sponsored by Shakey’s Pizza.
Perpetual nipped National U in five sets last April 26 but took a straight-set setback to Ateneo last week, dropping the Lady Altas to third in the five-team group.
USLS, on the other hand, faces a tougher rival in former two-time champion but winless Adamson in the 4 p.m. main contest with the Lady Stingers gunning for a win to advance and avoid the specter of going through a playoff for the last quarters berth in Group B.
But expect the Lady Falcons to fight to the end after absorbing a pair of 1-3 losses to qualifiers San Sebastian and UST, which clinched the top two quarters seats in the group with 3-0 cards. They will dispute the top spot at the close of the elims on Thursday.
Meanwhile, the Tigresses, with Judy Caballero firing 14 hits and former MVP Mary Jean Balse adding 12 points, capped last Sunday’s sweep of the fancied teams as they toppled the Lady Stingers, 25-23, 25-12, 25-14, to match SSC’s unbeaten run in the event backed by Mikasa and Accel.

The top four teams from each group after the single round elims will advance to the quarters, where they will be grouped into one for another one round competition. However, teams that clashed in the elims will no longer meet in the quarters although their records will be carried over. The top four squads will advance to the crossover semis, a pair of best-of-three matches between Nos. 1 and 4 and Nos. 2 and 3 with the winners disputing the crown in another best-of-three duel. –Dante Navarro
Far Eastern U pressed its bid early and pounded on National U’s defense upfront, scoring a 25-22, 25-15, 25-20 victory to advance to the quarterfinals in the ninth Shakey’s V-League Presented by Smart at The Arena in San Juan yesterday.
Rosemarie Vargas and Thai reinforcement Eve Sanorseang stood at the forefront of FEU’s attack, delivering 15 and nine kills, respectively, as the Lady Tams outhit the Lady Bulldogs, 47-36, to fashion out the win in 1:21.
The victory was FEU’s second in three games in Group A as it joined group-mate Ateneo (3-0) and Group B leaders San Sebastian (3-0) and University of Santo Tomas (2-0) in the quarterfinal round of the league’s season-opening conference sponsored by Shakey’s Pizza and backed by Mikasa and Accel.
The four teams in each group after a single round elims will advance to the next phase.
Ateneo likewise posted a three-set win against Southwestern University, 25-16, 25-19, 25-19, to sweep Group A with a 4-0 record in the second game.
Alyssa Valdez rammed in 10 kills and finished with 14 hits while Fille Cainglet slowed down with a nine-point game after a series of double-digit outputs for the Lady Eagles, who wrapped up the match and their elims stint in 66 minutes.
Gretchen Ho also shot nine points while Thai Phee Nok Kesinee and Dzi Gervacio added eight and seven hits, respectively, for the defending champions.
Princess Pido topscored for SWU with 12 points but failed to draw solid backup from the rest as Rapril Aguilar added eight and Danika Gendrauli struggled for five points for the Lady Cobras, who dropped to 0-3.
SWU needs to win against Perpetual Help tomorrow to force a playoff for the last quarters berth with NU.
Vargas wound up with 17 points while Sanorseang came away with three service aces to finish with 12. Guest player Jen Manzano and Wenneth Eulalio chipped in 10 hits apiece to underscore FEU’s balanced attack.
“We executed our game plan well,” said FEU coach Nes Pamilar, whose wards held NU to 36 conversions out of 100 spike attempts.
NU’s guest player Din-Din Santiago matched Vargas’ 17-hit output, all on kills, including three straight in the third set that moved the Lady Bulldogs closer to 20-24. But Vargas unloaded a cross-court attack set by Gyzelle Sy to seal the victory.
FEU complemented its superb offense with a solid net defense as it held Santiago to 17 points after scoring a whopping 31 kills against Southwestern U last week.
Myla Pablo had nine points while Maricar Nepomuceno added eight for the Lady Bulldogs, who commited 20 errors.

Far Eastern U and National U collide today in a key match-up for a quarterfinal berth while Ateneo goes for a sweep of Group A against winless Southwestern U in the ninth Shakey’s V-League Presented by Smart at The Arena in San Juan today.
The Lady Tams swept the SWU Lady Cobras last Tuesday to bounce back from an opening day loss to Ateneo and stay in the hunt for a spot in the next round, also in Group A. But the Lady Bulldogs likewise rebounded from back-to-back setbacks with a win, also over the Cobras.
That makes the 2 p.m. match a crucial one for FEU and NU with the winner joining Ateneo in the next round of the tournament sponsored by Shakey’s Pizza and backed by Mikasa and Accel.
FEU hopes to neutralize the power-hitting Din-Din Santiago, who unloaded a whopping 31-hit game against SWU, and a gritty NU side that includes Maricar Nepomuceno, Rizza Mandapat and Myla Pablo, and build the needed momentum for its final elims match against reigning NCAA champion Perpetual Help.
FEU coach Nes Pamilar is expected to lean on mainstays Rosemarie Vargas, Wenneth Eulalio and Marie Basas while hoping that Thai reinforcement Eve Sanorseang to finally settle down with her game and complement with the team’s play patterns.
Defending champion Ateneo, meanwhile, is fancied to get past SWU in the 4 p.m. match for a sweep of the single round elims even as University of St. La Salle-Bacolod seeks to seal a quarters seat in Group B against former six-time champion and qualifier University of Santo Tomas in the 6 p.m. main game.

San Sebastian College reinforcement Jeng Bualee said that the Philippines has got what it takes to become a regional power in women’s volleyball again but badly needs international exposure.
“It is hard to say if the Philippines can match other countries like Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia and Malaysia because they do not join international matches,” said the 28-year-old Bualee, a resident import of one-time Shakey’s V-League champion SSC, having been with the team since 2005 with eight individual awards to boast of.
The Philippines established itself as a volley power in Southeast Asia in the early 90s but lost its ranking since with poor showing until Sports Vision and Shakey’s linked up to put up the V-League in 2004.
And the level of Filipino play can only get better.
“They are better now than before, not only my team but the other teams as well. They play good now and they learned well from other Thai players,” said Bualee, a former Thai pro star who also suits up for a Vietnam squad.
“When I first came here, some only play to enjoy, but now many of them already know how to win games,” said Bualee. “I think they (Filipino players) should learn from other countries, because there are many good players from Thailand and Vietnam.”
“I want more players to learn how to win, how to learn from their opponents, and how to prepare for international games,” said Bualee, the leading scorer in the current ninth Shakey’s V-League.
For her part, Ateneo’s three-time import Phee Nok Kesinee said she always looks forward to playing for the Lady Eagles not only to help them win championships but also help develop the sport.
“Ateneo and I are very close. My feelings are still with them,” said the 31-year-old Thai national player, who played for the Lady Eagles back in 2007 and 2011 seasons of the league.
“When I came back, everyone is better, even the other teams are quicker and stronger now,” said the 31-year-old Kesinee, who played for the Lady Eagles back in 2007 and 2011 seasons of the league and also saw action in Australia and Germany. “They (women’s volleyball players) do not have a lot of fans, but I think they are good.”
“If more people will watch and play, I think they (Filipino players) can become contenders again and I think they can win,” said Kesinee, who won last year’s MVP honors while powering Ateneo to the first conference championship.
Meanwhile, Ateneo outclassed NCAA champion Perpetual Help, 25-14, 25-20, 25-13, late Thursday to move within a win from sweeping the elims in Group A of the ninth Shakey’s V-League Presented by Smart at The Arena in San Juan.
Fille Cainglet continued to flash fine form, knocking down 10 kills and finishing with 12 hits, the same output put in by Thai Phee Nok Kesinee, who also had three blocks.
The Lady Eagles dominated the Altas on the net, 42-25, and finished with six blocks against their rivals two as the defending champions primed up for a sweep of the elims against the winless Southwestern U side tomorrow and the upcoming quarterfinal phase.

National University recovered from a shaky start and repulsed a fighting Southwestern University side, 20-25, 25-21, 25-17, 25-17, to remain in the hunt for a quarterfinal berth in the ninth Shakey’s V-League Presented by Smart heats up at The Arena in San Juan City yesterday.
Din-din Santiago fired away 31 hits, including 25 kills, as she spearheaded the Lady Bulldogs’ fightback in the last three frames to pull off the one-hour, 41-minute victory and snap their back-to-back setbacks.
More importantly, the win put NU back on track for a crack at a quarters slot in Group A while dealing SWU its second straight loss in the season-opening conference of the league sponsored by Shakey’s Pizza.
“They were a bit overconfident, but settled down after dropping the opening set,” said NU coach Francis Vicente, whose wards committed 34 faults, in Filipino. “I told them to be ready for a big SWU comeback since it also dropped its first game.”
Maricar Nepomuceno, Rizza Mandapat and Myla Pablo backed Santiago with a combined 31-hit effort while Ivy Perez kept the team’s offense going with 30 excellent sets.
NU came away with 50 kills to overpower SWU, which could only churn out a 33-spike production, including 13 from Danika Gendrauli and 10 from Anne Pido, in the event organized by Sports Vision and backed by Mikasa and Accel.
University of St. La Salle checked an impending skid with a gritty stand in the decider as it hacked out a 25-17, 25-19, 23-25, 14-25, 15-10 victory to boost its quarterfinal bid in Group B.
Jovelyn Gonzaga delivered two crucial spikes in the fifth set while Patty Orendain came through with two blocks to frustrate the Lady Knights and even their card at 1-1.
Letran fell to 0-3 and bowed out of the race.
The Lady Bulldogs struggled in the early going and fell behind, 10-18, as SWU’s guest player Genie Sabas checked Santiago with a solid net defense.
Gendrauli closed out the set at 25-20 with a drop shot.
Santiago, however, reasserted her might in the second frame, pouring in 10 hits as the NU prevailed behind a 9-2 exchange, capped by Pablo’s two blocks.
It was more of the same in the next two sets with the Lady Bulldogs sustaining their fine start then holding off the Cobras’ comebacks. -Dante Navarro

Jeng Bualee produced another 25-plus effort, firing 31 kills to power San Sebastian College past a tough University of St. La Salle, 25-18, 20-25, 25-19, 25-21, to regain the solo lead in Group B of the ninth Shakey’s V-League Presented by Smart at The Arena in San Juan yesterday.
The Thai ace unloaded half of her output in the last two sets as the Lady Stags scuttled the Bacolod-based squad to formalize their stint in the quarters with a third straight win. Bualee also shone in non-scoring department, coming up with 10 digs and 10 receptions.
Analyn Benito backed Bualee’s sterling game with an equally impressive 23-hit effort, highlighted by 19 kills, while Rubie de Leon kept SSC’s plays in motion with 54 excellent sets.
Patty Orendain, Jovelyn Gonzaga and June denial combined for 37 points for the Lady Stingers, who proved to be a tough contender despite its opening game setback in the league sponsored by Shakey’s Pizza and backed by Mikasa and Accel.
Earlier, Far Eastern University put on a virtual volley clinic against a struggling Southwestern University side, cruising to a 25-9, 25-8, 25-15 victory to get back into the thick of things.
The Lady Tams stamped their class early with Thai guest player Eve Sanorseang, Rosemarie Vargas, Wenneth Eulalio and Marie Basas combining for 44 hits to completely outplay the Lady Cobras and fashion out the 64-minute romp.
It was a big comeback for FEU, which dropped its opening game match to defending champion Ateneo in Group A although the Lady Tams need to hurdle at least one its last two games to clinch a berth in the quarterfinal round of the season-opening tournament of the league organized by Sports Vision.
Sanorseang converted 11 spikes from 26 attempts marred by three faults while Vargas delivered 12 kills from 32 tries against four faults. Sanorseang also had three blocks and made one service ace.
So lackluster was SWU’s offense that Rapril Aguilar’s five-kill performance, marred by three faults, stood as the team’s best. Guest player Danika Gendrauli struggled for four while Marlyn Llagoso and Nica Gulliman could only combine for just five hits against the Lady Tams’ tough net defense and superb reception.
In all, FEU dished out 45 spikes, three times more than SWU’s measly 13-hit output. The Lady Tams also had 39 excellent sets compared to SWU’s 13. -Dante Navarro
San Sebastian tries to formalize its stint in the quarterfinal round as it faces a debuting University of St. La Salle side today even as Southwestern U opens its bid against Far Eastern U in the ninth Shakey’s V-League Presented by Smart at The Arena in San Juan.
The Lady Stags rolled past the Adamson Lady Falcons in four then swept the Letran spikers to share the Group B lead with the comebacking UST Tigreses, who also beat the Lady Knights in three last Sunday.
But SSC is expected to have its hands full against USLS, out to improve its impressive third place effort last year, the Bacolod-based squad’s best finish in the league sponsored by Shakey’s Pizza.
Bannered by guest players Jovelyn Gonzaga and Rebbie Delotindo, the USLS spikers hope to surprise the Lady Stags in their 4 p.m. duel with Patty Orendain, Cha-Cha Moralde, Beauty Denila, Baby Abaño expected to provide help.
But the Lady Stingers will need to work doubly hard to stop the Stags, headed by the league’s current leading scorer Jang Baulee.
The Thai ace had dished out a total of 53 spikes in two games although she stood in fifth with a 38.06 percent clip in spiking order paced by Perpetual Help’s Sandra delos Santos, who had an impressive 47.22 percent norm.
The SWU Lady Cobras, on the other hand, hope to draw the best from guest players Nica Gulliman and Genie Sabas as they take on the Lady Tams in the 2 p.m. opener. FEU is also trying to bounce back from a setback to defending champion Ateneo and stay in the hunt for a quarters berth in Group A of the tournament organized by Sports Vision and backed by Mikasa and Accel.

Reigning titlist Ateneo survived a meltdown in the middle sets as it turned back a fiesty National U, 25-15, 26-24, 20-25, 25-14, to barge into the quarterfinal round of the ninth Shakey’s V-League presented by Smart at The Arena in San Juan City yesterday.
Fille Saint Cainglet and Alyssa Valdez carried the Lady Eagles through by combining for 15 hits apiece including a combined 27 kills but they did most of the damage in the fourth and final set when they alternated up front in sealing their way to the next round with a 2-0 (win-loss) slate.
Angeline Marie Gervacio pumped in 13 hits while Ateneo’s Thai import Phee Nok Kesinee scattered 12 but the two were most effective in defense by combining for seven blocks including a game-high five by the former.
Ateneo coach Roger Gorayeb though is far from satisfied.
“Nawala aggressiveness namin nung kalagitnaan, sumasabay na ng laro sa kalaban, hindi na dumedepensa (Our aggressiveness disappeared in the middle of the game, the girls are trying the play the game of our opponent, they’re not defending anymore),” said Gorayeb.
After convingly seizing the opening set, the Lady Eagles played a little complacent and paid dearly for it as the Lady Bulldogs snatched the momentum and even led by as big as four points, the last at 18-14.
NU then appeared headed to taking the second set when Dindin Santiago, its guest player who suited up for Santo Tomas last year, pummels a kill to make it a 24-22 lead in this tournament sponsored by Shakey’s Pizza.
But the Lady Eagles kept their cool and took the next four points, thanks to three Valdez spikes and a kill from team captain Gretchen Ho, who contributed seven hits, to save the set in the event backed by Mikasa and Accel and organized by Sports Vision.
Though dropping the heartbreaker, NU didn’t flinch and responded by dominating the third set, thanks to the long-limbed Santiago, who led all hitters with 22, and Maricar Nepomuceno’s continued bombing from the net.
It turned out the Lady Bulldogs’ last show of resistance as Valdez and Cainglet took turns in delivering the blows to seal it.
In the only other match of the day, University of Santo Tomas bucked a sluggish start as it downed Adamson, 20-25, 25-17, 25-19, 25-22, to join Ateneo in the next phase with a 2-0 slate.
The Lady Falcons fell to their second straight defeat.
NU also fell to its second straight setback and closer to getting eliminated in the format that calls that only one gets eliminated in the two groups. –Joey Villar

Reigning NCAA champion Perpetual Help bucked an erratic game and overcame a tough National U side as it scrambled to a 25-15, 23-25, 25-17, 25-27, 15-12 victory to join defending champion Ateneo in the Group A lead in the ninth Shakey’s V-League presented by Smart at The Arena in San Juan yesterday.
The Lady Altas pounced on NU skipper Cal Nepomuceno’s attacking miscue then Thai import Kunbang Pornpimol foiled Rizza Mandapat’s match-tying kill to clinch the two crucial points in the decider and wrap up the two-hour victory.
“Pormnipol is still trying to complement with her teammates, especially with our setter,” said Perpetual coach Mike Rafael. “They’ve been moving well in practice but struggle a bit in the actual game.”
Perpetual Help committed 30 errors but had five players scoring in double figures as they held on to snatch the victory in the tournament sponsored by Shakey’s Pizza and backed by Mikasa and Accel. Sandra delos Santos made 26 hits, including six services aces, while Pornpimol had 18, April Sartin added 15 and Honey Tubino and Norie Diaz chipped in 12 and 11 hits, respectively. [Read more...]
