ATENEO ace Alyssa Valdez has been named the Shakey’s V-League First Conference Player of the Week for the week of April 7-14 after steering the Lady Eagles to a 2-0 record in Group A play.
This is the first-ever Player of the Week award to be handed out by the league, and it is so fitting that Valdez earned the weekly honor.
Behind Valdez, Ateneo’s bid for a third consecutive championship went into full throttle this early, beating fancied teams University of Santo Tomas and San Sebastian College.
The San Juan, Batangas native had a brilliant outing in the Lady Eagles’ 25-23, 25-23, 25-20 season-opening win against the Tigresses, scoring 22 hits, including four service aces, and had eight digs.
Despite missing the services of some of the members of Ateneo’s ‘Fab 5’, namely Dzi Gervacio, Gretchen Ho and A Nacachi, Valdez took charge, simply picking up what she left off in UAAP Season 75.
In the Lady Eagles’ 22-25, 25-17, 25-15, 25-18 victory over the Lady Stags, Valdez scattered 19 of her 25 points from attacks and tallied five digs.
After dropping the opening frame, Valdez presided over a 5-0 run, highlighted by her back-to-back service aces that put Ateneo ahead, 8-2, in the second set and never looked back.
The Lady Eagles are virtually assured of a slot in the eight-team quarterfinals.
After two games, Valdez is now leading the tournament in scoring with 47 points, five ahead of National University’s Dindin Santiago, who placed runner-up in the Player of the Week honors.
The cornerstone of the Lady Bulldogs’ women’s volleyball program, Santiago led NU to victories against newcomer Arellano University and Adamson to grab the Group B lead with a 2-0 record.
Ateneo hopes that Valdez will continue her splendid show against Letran on Tuesday and La Salle-Dasmariñas on Sunday to get its title-retention drive on track.
